Maintaining Your Professional Appearance

Anyone who has worked in the spray tan industry knows that the solution has a tendency to create little splatters during application. This isn’t a big deal as DHA tanning solutions are water-based, but it will make you look unprofessional. Nobody wants to get a spray tan from someone who has solution all over their clothes and equipment.

The best way to prevent this is by setting up a spray tan tent every time you apply a tan. Tents effectively capture any rogue spray and help keep your and your equipment looking good. These tents are easy to clean, making it easy to maintain your professional appearance. In the unfortunate event of a spill, a tent also helps contain the mess.

Indispensible Tanning Supplies

Part of being a qualified spray tanning technician is being well-prepared for any and all contingencies. You never know what is going to happen when you are at a customer’s home, so bringing along a surfeit of supplies is always advisable. Personally, I always bring along at least spray tanning applicators, just incase something goes awry.

And despite years of experience in the industry, I still use spray tan tents no matter where I am. Just the other day, I was preparing to apply a tan when I noticed that the solution wasn’t coming out correctly. I brought the gun over to the tanning tent to inspect it, and the next thing I knew, the nozzle flew off and solution spewed everywhere. Luckily I had the tent there.

Once your clients step out of your tanning tents, the job is far from done. Now that they have a gorgeous bronze color, the next priority is ensuring that they stay that way. Once the solution has been applied, allow 5-10 minutes to dry before putting on any clothing. If the solution is still wet, it may stick to clothes and rub off. It is also important to avoid water—including showers—for at least 8 hours after the tan has been applied.

Be sure to having tanning moisturizers and maintainers on hand for your clients to purchase. These products ensure the tan lasts for the longest amount of time possible and fades in a uniform manner. For best results, it is recommended that the spray tan treatment be applied about once a week.

Last time we began reviewing the proper technique for applying a spray tan and finished by laying out the process for applying the tan to a person’s front. Once this is done, move to the client’s side and use the same back-and-forth motion to go up the inside and under the arm, as well as down the leg. Repeat this process for each side of the body.

When applying the spray tan to the back, work down from the neck in the same pattern that was utilized on the front of the body. After this, go back to the front and work on the area around the next and shoulders, and finish by carefully applying the solution to the face; this process is fairly simple but will take some practice to master. Utilizing spray tan tents will aid the application process and prevent the solution from getting everywhere. Next time we’ll go over some of the post-tan measures, as well as helpful tips for maintaining the color.
