Vanity of Male Swimmers
In high school I was a member of the varsity swim team. I was not a stellar athlete, but I still earned a spot on the team (most likely because they needed to flesh out the women’s team). The men’s team, however, was stacked with young men who also swam in an extremely competitive local club.
These are the male swimmers who shave all of their body hair before competition to cut down on friction in the water. Some of these guys were also incredibly vain; though, I can’t say that I blame them entirely- those jammers leave nothing to the imagination. I suspect that some of them went so far as to have airbrush tanning solution applied before big meets. Either that or they didn’t mind braving the winter weather to soak up some rays.
Why is My Tan Blotchy?
Who doesn’t love the feeling of coming out of a spray tanning salon with a perfectly even golden glow? Unfortunately, that feeling can be ruined when a seemingly perfect tan begins to fade in a blotchy pattern. What are the reasons a tan becomes blotchy?
One culprit can be getting a spray tan over an existing tan. Airbrush tanning solution cannot properly react with the skin if there is an existing tan in the way. Another cause of a blotchy tan can be using too deep of a color. Skin cells die and shed at different times, so if the applied color is too far away from the natural skin tone then as skin sloughs off it will look patchy.
Brushing Up On Application Technique
Even those of us who have been in the spray tanning industry for a while can run into issues every now and then. For example, many of the technicians I have consulted with have reported issues with pooling on their clients’ skin. This can happen for a variety of reasons.
First, too much solution may be coming out of your spray tanning gun, so adjust the PSI accordingly. Second, be sure to keep moving. Each stroke should be applied with continuous, medium speed motion. Finally, your airbrush tanning system or technique may not be to blame at all; your client may not have properly prepared for the appointment. Remind your clients that body washes, depilatories, deodorant, and other creams applied to the body will not allow the solution to penetrate the skin, causing pooling.
A Winter Spray Tanning Solution
It’s probably been months since your skin has enjoyed any sunlight. What’s a girl to do during the gray and dreary winter months? Most tanning enthusiasts aren’t as fortunate as the Sunshine State citizens who get to soak up the glowing Florida rays year-round. But there is a solution to such a debacle that allows all sun seekers to obtain the rich, caramel coloring they desire without the sun’s presence.
Spray tanning is a celebrated alternative to sun tanning as it allows sun worshipers to gain the sun-kissed glow they desire without every stepping foot in the sun. Mobile spray tanning is another fabulous resource for tanning enthusiasts as it delivers the same great services of a spray tanning salon without the hassle of getting there. This method is ideal for tanners who wish to dodge venturing out into the gray and dreary weather during those oh-so-cold months of winter.
Choosing Tan Solution the First Time
Dozens of variables contribute to the overall appearance of your sunless tan, but none of them is more crucial than the sunless tan solution. Many people have walked out of a tanning tent looking like an Oompa Loompa because they isn’t on using a solution that was too dark for their complexion.
There are four basic skin types when it comes to complexion, from pale white to deep black. Tanning solutions darken your skin through DHA, and you can find products with varying concentrations of the compound. People with fair skin should start in the 5-6% range, while people on the darker end of the spectrum can go to 8-9% and even add extra DHA. If it’s your first time tanning and you don’t know which solution to choose, ask your tanning artists and remember it’s always better to go too light than too dark.
Tan Your Way to More Muscle?
Have you ever noticed that all body builders tan—excessively? It’s comical to see them flexing on stage while a radioactive glow is emitted from their body. You may assume that bodybuilders are simply driven by the aesthetics of tanning, which is true, but not necessarily why you think.
Bronzed skin is obviously prized in Western culture, but bodybuilders tan to bring out their muscles. When you skin is tan, it creates a shadow effect on your body which accentuates the striations, making you look more cut. Not only does tanning work to help bring out bulk, it also has a slimming effect for long, lean muscles, which is why you’ll see airbrush tanning systems on the sets of photo shoots. Tanning is a great way to instantly improve your physique, but unlike the body builders, remember to use a little tanning discretion.
What is DHA?
Have you ever wondered what the secret ingredient is in airbrush tanning solution? The main darkening agent in tanning solutions is DHA, or dihydroxyacetones. Some people may experience some minor skin agitation, but DHA is safe for your skin and the FDA has approved it for cosmetic use.
At the molecular level, DHA is a simple carbohydrate composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. The chemical is typically derived from sugar beets and sugar cane, as well as through the fermentation of glycerin. DHA tans you by affecting the amino acids in the outermost layer of your skin. The DHA levels in sunless tanning products range from 3-15 percent; the solution you use will be dependant on your natural skin tone and how dark you want to look.

Tanning Solutions
Having lived in the Southwest for the majority of my life, I’ve come accustomed to sporting a perennial tan. Since my job has forced me to relocate to Iowa, the opportunities to bask in the sun’s rays are limited to the traditional sunny seasons. This left me looking for alternatives for maintaining my healthy golden hue.
Although I was reluctant to try any sort of artificial tan, my friend suggested that I tryout a local spray tanning company. Since there aren’t any of the cancer risk that are intrinsic in tanning beds, I decided to give it a shot. After the first session, I was hooked. The tanning professional came to my home with a mobile tanning booth and had me looking like a bronzed Greek god in no time. Now I have the company comeback periodically to give me a new coat and keep me looking beautiful.
