UV Radiation Explained

Monday, June 14, 2010

By now you are probably well aware of the inherent risks of tanning and exposure to UV radiation, but do you know how this radiation works and why it is so detrimental? On the light spectrum, UV rays are shorter than visible light but longer than x-rays, meaning that humans can’t see them and they emit a considerable amount of radiation. Because it is an ionizing radiation, UV causes chemical reactions, such as sunburns. And while this is certainly one of the negative chemical reactions, small amounts of UV exposure are necessary for proper vitamin D synthesis.

In order to help people determine their risk, a UV index has been developed. This internationally used system certainly isn’t foolproof, but it serves as an effective way to gauge your risk on any given day. Tanning beds utilize the same UV radiation we get from the sun, but since these rays are highly concentrated, their detrimental effect is magnified. Because of this, sunless tanning methods are the only safe way to darken your skin.

Researchers Link Tanning Beds to Melanoma

Friday, June 11, 2010

While driving to work this morning I listened to a podcast by NPR that investigated the risk of tanning beds. A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Minnesota explored the risk of tanning beds and their correlation to melanoma development. More than 1,100 melanoma patients ages 25-59 were compared to a group of similar, but healthy, individuals. The researchers found that those with significant tanning bed usage—50 or more hours in a lifetime; more than 100 sessions in a lifetime; or 10 or more years of usage—were 2.5 to 3 times as likely to contract melanoma.

They were quick to assert, however, that tanning in the sun can be just as dangerous. Tanning beds simply concentration the same UV rays. This led to the conclusion that there was no safe way to tan, but the researchers obviously neglected the only truly safe tanning method: airbrush tanning.

Now that the weather is heating up and the sun is coming out, an increasing number of people will be heading outside in search of golden-toned skin. And while we receive an assortment of essential vitamins for sun exposure, too much can wreak havoc on your skin and pave the way for future health complications. To date, sunless tanning is the only proven way to darken your skin safely.

Despite the sunshine during the summer, I still get a sunless spray tan on a regular basis. This gives me a solid base color, so when I go out in the sun, I can apply liberal amounts of sunscreen and still maintain a gorgeous tan. Utilizing a sunless tanning lotion is another ideal way to look like a bronzed god on the beach without having to exposure yourself to detrimental radiation.

For those who invest in spray tanning on a regular basis, it makes sense to do everything in your power to preserve your tan. Not only will this save you money by limiting the number of applications you need, but it will also save you time be requiring fewer appointments. Your preparation should begin well before the spray tan artist arrives. Begin by thoroughly exfoliating your skin, which will slough off dead skin cells and prepare your body to receive the solution.

Applying a premium sunless tanning lotion is also beneficial. This will make your skin more receptive to the tanning solution and ensure that your skin remains moisturized. Tanning lotions also contain ingredients to help your body naturally produce melanin, which dictates the tone of your skin. Also remember to refrain from showering after receiving your tan, as premature bathing can rinse the solution from your skin

Preserving Your Rich Color

If you’re decided to invest in a sunless tan, you probably want to take measures to ensure that your tan looks the best it can and stays as long as possible. Before the artist shows up at your home with their airbrush tanning equipment, it is essential to exfoliate your skin thoroughly with a salt or sugar scrub. This will slough off any dead skin cells and ensure that the tan is applied to fresh, healthy skin.

Once the tan has been applied, refrain from showering for at least a day so that the tan has adequate time to soak in. During the duration of your tan, try to shower sparingly, as the tan will lose some of its luster every time you bathe. In addition, air-dry when at all possible, as excess drying with a towel can irritate skin and rub-off your sunless tan.

More Sunless Tanning Solutions

After being in the sunless tanning industry for almost a decade, I have amassed a fairly large clientele. Some of my customers get their tan every week, no matter what. Others only get a tan during stretches of sunless weather or in preparation for a big event. Many of the people who get a tan on an irregular basis ask me how they can maintain there bronze coloring when they don’t receive a tan for weeks on end.

Of course, there are the little tricks that can get a few extra days out of your spray tan, but they certainly aren’t permanent solutions. The fastest and easiest way to keep your color is with a sunless tanning lotion. Unlike a bronzer, the color from the lotion will last about a week and it will firm and nourish your skin without leaving an unpleasant odor.
