Maintaining Your Professional Appearance

Friday, August 27, 2010
posted by TanNBeautiful

Anyone who has worked in the spray tan industry knows that the solution has a tendency to create little splatters during application. This isn’t a big deal as DHA tanning solutions are water-based, but it will make you look unprofessional. Nobody wants to get a spray tan from someone who has solution all over their clothes and equipment.

The best way to prevent this is by setting up a spray tan tent every time you apply a tan. Tents effectively capture any rogue spray and help keep your and your equipment looking good. These tents are easy to clean, making it easy to maintain your professional appearance. In the unfortunate event of a spill, a tent also helps contain the mess.

Bring Service to Your Customers

More and more people are turning to the internet for all of their shopping needs. You can find virtually anything online these days, and as people take advantage of this convenience, brick-and-mortar locations are becoming increasingly obsolete. There are certain things, however, that the internet will never be able to replace.

Take sunless tanning for instance. There’s no way to achieve a tan through a computer, but people still want that convenience; this is what makes a mobile tanning booth so valuable. You can set up a website for your company where clients can go to schedule appointments. Then you can bring the tan right to their homes, capitalizing on the internet trend and eliminating the need for a traditional storefront.

Tanning Brings Out Muscle Definition

Friday, July 9, 2010
posted by TanNBeautiful

For the last 13 years I’ve been competing in bodybuilding competitions around the country. Over the course of my career I’ve seen thousands of new products, supplements and training routines come and go, but people are always surprised when I tell them that mobile sunless tanning is the most important innovation for the bodybuilding industry. Most people know that bodybuilders tan incessantly and there is actually a practical reason for this: it makes you look more ripped.

When your skin is tan, it creates a shadow effect around your muscles, making you look more defined. I used to have to go to the tanning beds several times per week, but the results were unpredictable and I didn’t like the amount of UV exposure I was subjecting my body to. With mobile sunless tanning, I can get a tan virtually anywhere and the results are always impeccable.

Pre-Dance Tanning

As the school year winds to an end, high school seniors around the country are finalizing their preparations for prom. Traditionally, this is one of my busiest times of year, and in order to capitalize on this annual boon, I have developed some marketing tactics specifically for the spring. I always start a couple months in advance, placing advertisements in school newspapers and near establishments that rent out tuxedos and evening gowns.

Prom virtually always puts a strain on pocketbooks, so I make sure to offer discounts and incentives during this time. One of my most successful promotions has been our group tanning sessions. While a private tanning session can be expensive for a teen, we offer packages where multiple artists will come to your house, and you and your friends can get your tans at the same time. Having several tanning tents set up is always a fun experience for the clients and it gives us the ability to offer steep discounts.

Determining Operating Costs for Your Tanning Business

Thursday, May 27, 2010
posted by TanNBeautiful

When you start a tanning business, it seems relatively simple at first blush, but there are several variables to consider when determining the operating costs. Everyone knows that they will have to invest in an applicator and tanning solution, but do you know how much solution you need? How much are you going to spend on gas, insurance and additional supplies?

Every new applicator will cost from $200 to around $500, but this is a one-time purchase; determining the volume of solution, lotion and other products is more difficult. About two ounces of solution should be used on each tan, meaning that the solution costs per tan should be about $2-3. The one cost that is often overlooked with mobile tanning companies is gas and insurance for vehicles. While applying each tan itself may be relatively inexpensive, getting there may not be. It is important to determine an epicenter and maximum radius you are willing to travel to keep these costs at a minimum.

Hiring New Spray Tan Artists

Friday, May 7, 2010
posted by TanNBeautiful

If you are just starting your first spray tan business, chances are you have few, if any, other employees. For a fledgling enterprise, having a limited rota of spray artists isn’t an issue. As your business begins to grow, however, you will find that you need additional artists to avoid scheduling conflicts and meet the demands of your growing clientele. Qualified spray tan artists are hard to come by, so it is important to have a system in place for training new hires.

Start by having them observe yourself or another qualified spray tan artist. Once they have learned the proper technique and methodology for applying the solution, it is good to have them hone their skills on non-paying customers; see if they have a friend or relative who is willing to serve as a test subject. After a couple of debacles with some of my own hires, I also tell their first few customers that the artist is new and offer them a discount, just in case.

Preparation is King in Spray Tanning

As a professional spray tan artisan, I pride myself on being prepared for any and all spray tanning scenarios. My vehicle is fully stocked with spray tanning supplies, and I keep a full supply of backups at my storefront, just in case. This level of preparedness may not seem necessary in the spray tanning industry, but if you fail to deliver a quality service to your customers, the effects can be devastating—particularly because so much of my business is generated via word-of-mouth advertising.

Last week I had an appointment with a client who had particularly dark skin. In fact, I didn’t even have a tanning solution with a DHA level high enough to give them the results they were looking for. Luckily, I came prepared. In my car, I had some DHA booster drops, so I added a few to my darkest solution to create a custom blend for the customer’s skin. The client was so impressed by my preparation and ingenuity that she asked for a few business cards to give to her friends.

The Merits of Mobile Tanning

With our busy workaday lives, few of us have the time or patience to go to a traditional tanning salon and wait in line. It was this revelation that led me to start my own mobile spray tanning business. I’ve only been providing services for about three months now, but I have already built a loyal customer base.

In my limited experience in the industry, I’ve found that people are looking for viable alternatives to traditional tanning beds—and spray tanning is just that. The results tend to be better than tanning beds and it doesn’t come with the same health concerns. One of the best parts is that I haven’t had to do hardly any advertising; much of my business has been generated from customer referrals and word of mouth, as there are few other spray tan artisans in my area..

Mobile Tanning Booth Business

technotan_booth1Last week I helped shuttle my brother and sister around for their high school homecoming. From picking out their outfits to going through their meticulous preparations, they spent hours getting ready. Most of the girls that attended had their hair professionally done and visited a tanning salon.

While the hairstylist came to the house, the girls were forced to schedule a time to go to a tanning salon. That was when it hit me; why not have a mobile tanning booth? With a few simple supplies you can start your own tanning business that is more attuned with the needs of its clientele than traditional brick and mortar locations.
