Answers to Common Spray On Tan Questions
I’ve been using spray on tans for quite a while now to achieve a healthy glow. As a result, many of my friends consult with me before going to get a tan of their own. One common question I’m often asked is, “Will a spray on tan protect me from the sun?” The answer is unequivocally no! A spray on tan will give you a lovely glow, but you still need to put on sunscreen before spending a day at the beach.
Another common question I hear is, “Is DHA safe?” The answer is yes. DHA is FDA approved, but it doesn’t hurt to read the ingredient list on the spray on tan solution, particularly if you have any allergies or skin sensitivities.
Mom to the Rescue
This past weekend was Homecoming at my daughter’s high school. Following the big football game, there is a school-wide Homecoming dance. My daughter saved up her own babysitting money to purchase the dress that she wanted; a beautiful purple halter top gown.
Unfortunately, she had some stubborn tan lines from spending the summer outdoors. When she tried on her dress the day before the dance she freaked out when she saw how prominent the tan lines were. Thankfully, I was able to book an appointment for her at a local salon that has a fabulous airbrush tanning system. The technician was able to cover up the tan lines and even out her skin so she looked flawless at the dance.
Trial and Error
There is no “one blend fits all” when it comes to airbrush tanning solutions. Various skin colors react differently to various amounts of DHA in solutions. It is important to test out different solutions before using them in your salon.
Conduct an experiment using friends of various skin types. Offer them free airbrush tans in exchange for allowing you to use them as guinea pigs. Take photos before and after the tanning session, and then again a few days later so you can see how well the airbrush tanning solution holds up. After your experiment, select the best solutions for use in your salon.
What Do You Know About Airbrush Tanning?
So what exactly do you know about airbrush tanning? Most people know it’s a type of spray tan mist that’s a much safer alternative to traditional sun tanning, but to get into specifics a little more in depth, airbrush tanning uses an air compressor and air brush to spray a fine-mist tanning solution on the client’s body.
The airbrush tanning equipment, combined withpremium solution, delivers a flawless spray tan that takes about 10 minutes to apply. The actually tan itself, however, can take up to 12 hours to fully develop its rich caramel coloring. A spray tan usually lasts from seven to 10 days for the average person, depending on skin type and maintenance. You can keep your tan looking fabulous with specialty moisturizing lotion that should be applied twice a day starting the day after your spray tan.
Brushing Up On Application Technique
Even those of us who have been in the spray tanning industry for a while can run into issues every now and then. For example, many of the technicians I have consulted with have reported issues with pooling on their clients’ skin. This can happen for a variety of reasons.
First, too much solution may be coming out of your spray tanning gun, so adjust the PSI accordingly. Second, be sure to keep moving. Each stroke should be applied with continuous, medium speed motion. Finally, your airbrush tanning system or technique may not be to blame at all; your client may not have properly prepared for the appointment. Remind your clients that body washes, depilatories, deodorant, and other creams applied to the body will not allow the solution to penetrate the skin, causing pooling.
Tips for Tanning: Part 4
This week we’ll start with the fourth installment of our tips for spray tanning series, where we’re helping you get the most out of your airbrush tanning system. Today we’ll be looking at an oft-forgotten aspect of spray tanning: how long do I wait before I can shower? Many people like to get in a shower almost immediately following a spray tan in order to get the skin feeling as fresh as possible. This is a big no-no.
If you don’t wait at least six hours before your first shower you could completely negate the effects of your spray tan. This means that all your time, money and effort would simply be washed away. And no one likes to throw money down the drain. So the next time you spray tan make sure you wait the proper amount of time before getting in the shower or you could find yourself sorely disappointed!
Simple Advice for Healthy Skin
While there’s always commotion about the newest and finest skin care on the market, a few simple practices will lead to healthier skin. Most women would love to have more youthful skin, and can do so without making any significant purchases at all. For example, most experts recommend avoiding tanning salons, as excessive tanning and exposure to UV rays can harm your skin. If you can’t be without shimmering golden skin, you can always take advantage of sunless tanning. It’s also recommended that you drink lots of water to stay hydrated and prevent dry skin, and use quality sunscreen when you’re outdoors in direct sunlight.
In addition to all of the above, if you want to give your skin that extra boost, use natural skin care products, as opposed to those containing chemicals and additives. Keeping in mind all of the simple advice listed above will lead to more youthful skin and more years before visible signs of age appear.
Get Beautiful Skin without Cancer-Causing Radiation!
Ultraviolet radiation was recently upgraded to the highest cancer risk category, so it’s no surprise that people are looking for alternatives when it comes to tanning. And an extra tanning tax which went into effect a couple of months ago hasn’t encouraged many people to make an appointment at their local tanning salon either. With all of these forces working against those of us who want to be bronzed and beautiful, now is the perfect time to look into sunless tanning.
Advanced airbrush tanning systems let you achieve a rich, even tan without any of the damaging effects of traditional methods. Unlike tanning beds, you can pick the exact shade you want your skin to be. This helps prevent the fake, orange-looking tans we are all so familiar with. If you aren’t sure which tanning solution to use, ask your spray tan professional; but remember to err on the light side your first time.
Preserving Your Spray Tan
Unlike a regular tan that penetrates multiple layers of skin, a spray tan only affects the outermost skin cells. Because of this, your tan will wear off in about a week. The relatively short life span of a spray tan can be a good thing if you only want the added color for a special event, but most people will want to look bronze throughout the year. And the longer your tan lasts, the less time and money you have to spend getting it reapplied.
The first thing you should do is shower, shave and moisture before your tanning session. This will ensure your skin is healthy, smooth and ready to receive the tanning solution. You’ll also want to refrain from any contact with the water for several hours following the application so the solution has an opportunity to set in. Be sure to wear dark, baggy clothes to your tanning session to ensure solution doesn’t stick to or stain your clothing.
Selecting Your Spray Tanning Equipment
If you are just starting out in the spray tan industry, airbrush tanning equipment is the best option when it comes to selecting an applicator. As opposed to turbine systems, airbrush tanners offer several options during tanning, reach awkward areas with ease, and can be effortlessly controlled by any spray tan artist. They are also more affordable than their turbine counterparts are and can get the job done in a fraction of the time. There are two options of airbrush tanners: handheld units and airbrush guns. The handheld units will need to be tested and adjusted before applying any solution to ensure a proper flow. Airbrush guns are connected directly to a compressor on the ground and will also need some tuning prior to use.
But turbine equipment does have its advantages. Although airbrush tanning equipment is simple enough to set up, a turbine system will be up and running in less time. And since there is only one spray gun option, you won’t have to worry about adjusting any settings prior to starting. There is a tradeoff, of course, as you have less freedom is fine tune the equipment.
