Are There Risks From Spray Tanning?
By now, we are all well aware of the inherent risks associated with tanning beds and even with natural tanning from the sun. Due to these health concerns, many people are turning to airbrush tanning systems, and with good reason. Spray tanning, lotions and other related products don’t expose users to detrimental UV radiation. Many people are still left wondering, however, if there are any risks associated with common sunless tanning products.
DHA, or , is the ingredient in sunless tanning products that darkens the skin. The FDA has approved it for external applications, but it can be dangerous if inhaled or exposed to other permeable membranes, such as the eyes. When you are getting a spray tan, be sure to avoid any inhalation of the substance, and if you happen to be the artist, be sure that you properly prepare your client.
Preparation is King in Spray Tanning
As a professional spray tan artisan, I pride myself on being prepared for any and all spray tanning scenarios. My vehicle is fully stocked with spray tanning supplies, and I keep a full supply of backups at my storefront, just in case. This level of preparedness may not seem necessary in the spray tanning industry, but if you fail to deliver a quality service to your customers, the effects can be devastating—particularly because so much of my business is generated via word-of-mouth advertising.
Last week I had an appointment with a client who had particularly dark skin. In fact, I didn’t even have a tanning solution with a DHA level high enough to give them the results they were looking for. Luckily, I came prepared. In my car, I had some DHA booster drops, so I added a few to my darkest solution to create a custom blend for the customer’s skin. The client was so impressed by my preparation and ingenuity that she asked for a few business cards to give to her friends.
Selecting Your Airbrush Tanning System
If you are endeavoring to start your own tanning enterprise, the airbrush tanning systems you invest in are of the utmost importance. It doesn’t matter how good your business model is or how well you advertise if you can’t provide your clients with first-rate service. To that end, there are several options when it comes to purchasing your equipment, and it is advisable to do some research before making your investment.
For those serious about their spray tanning business, it is crucial to realize that not all tanning systems are created equal. An economic model may be adequate for personal use, but if you are going to be serving dozens of clients, opt for a premium model. More advanced tanning systems will help you achieve better results and often come with a variety of attachments and other peripheral equipment too.
The Right Airbrush Tanning System
When I first got into the spray tan industry, I had literally no knowledge about how to run my company or what products I would need. I managed the first year through a series of trial-and-error, and now that I have had my business for five years, I think I have a fairly thorough understanding of how to develop a successful enterprise. If I had to offer burgeoning spray tan entrepreneurs one piece of advice, it would be to research your equipment carefully before you invest.
Without a professional quality airbrush tanning system, you will achieve subpar results and deter your clients from employing your services again. For people looking to purchase their first set of tanning equipment, I recommend getting a comprehensive kit, which will include all of the essential items and accessories. Once you have all of the basic products, you can then make upgrades or replacements as you see fit.
Essential Tanning Supplies
There are two variables that impact the quality of an airbrush tan: the equipment and the abilities of the applicator. While the latter will only come through experience, having the proper equipment is possible for even the most novice spray tan artist. Several peripheral items that can improve the quality of your work, but a premium applicator is one of the indispensible airbrush tanning supplies.
A top-of-the-line tanning system will allow a seasoned professional to apply an amazing tan in less than three minutes. Premium models will also minimize the amount of tanning solution that you use, making the tan look as natural as possible and saving you money in the long run. While applying a spray tan may seem like a daunting task, virtually anyone can master the craft after just a few sessions.
Spray Tan Application: Part Two
In our last post, we covered some of the basic measures of the pre-application process. There are a few other precautions that you should make sure the customer is aware of; do not shave within 24 hours of the appointment; do not wear makeup; and do get wet for at least 8 hours after the appointment. Now that all of the prep work is out of the way, it is time to set up the airbrush tanning equipment and actually apply the tan.
When applying the solution, make sure that the gun is 8-10 inches from the body, and work in smooth, fluent motions from left to right. Start at the chest and slowly work your way down the body and back up again. This will give you a nice even coat on the front. Next time we will continue going over the application process.
