Sunless Tanning Lotion Tips
We want to help you avoid some of the pitfalls of sunless tanning. For instance, do not shave your legs (or arms) several hours before applying sunless tanning lotion. Although some people can handle it, if you have sensitive skin then you could be setting yourself up for some nasty, uncomfortable reactions.
Do exfoliate prior to using a sunless tanning lotion. Avoid nylon or loofah scrubbers as they can be too harsh. A gentle sea salt or cotton washcloth is a better idea. Do remember to test a patch of skin (somewhere not highly visible) so you can tell how dark you want to go.
Flawless Skin
Next week I’ll be jetting from the cold north to the tropics for a week long vacation. Before I go I want to make sure my skin looks flawless. After all, no one wants to look pale and sickly in a bikini.
I have a three-step regimen I use to get perfect skin. First, I exfoliate using Dead Sea salt. After thoroughly rinsing, I shave using a rich, creamy lather so as not to irritate the skin. The following afternoon I go the salon for a sunless spray tan. All this will take place two days before I leave so the color has plenty of time to soak in before I board the plane and then hit the beach.
DHA and Tyrosine
As popular as sunless tanning has become, not everyone knows about the active ingredients in sunless tan solutions. The first basic ingredient is called Dihodroxyacetone, commonly referred to as DHA. It is a colorless sugar that reacts to dead skin cells in the top layer of skin. The reaction causes the cells to take on an orange hue.
Tyrosine, another basic ingredient, is an amino acid. This amino acid increases the production of melanin in the skin, thus accelerating the effects of sunless tanning lotions and sprays. Dead skin cells remain on the body for about a week before naturally falling off. If you want to remove or fade a tan more quickly, use a mild exfoliant a day or two after tanning
T-Minus Three Months
Walking back from lunch today I had a conversation with another lunchtime walker about the weather. “This morning,” he said, “it was snowing a bit when I left the house.” (It was only drizzling and cold by the time we met up). I replied that after last month’s snow that blocked roads for days, I would prefer to put up with the rain and wind.
Secretly, I was thinking to myself, “T-minus three months until the pool opens!” I live at my apartment complex’s pool during the summer months. During the rest of the year I can swim indoors at the local health club, but swimming outdoors in the sun is a better experience. Each year I celebrate the start of a new summer swim season by treating myself to a spray tan using a mostly organic sunless tan solution.

Creating a Business Plan
For several months now a friend of mine has been toying with the idea of starting a spray tanning business. She’s never started a business before so she asked if she could pick my brain. I told her yes, of course, but also let her know right off the bat that she needed to first sit down and draft a business plan.
A business plan, I explained to her, forces you to think about the details. What sort of business do you want to run? How many employees with you need to start a tanning business? How much money do you need for supplies? At what point will you break even? Once she had a business plan in place I was able to go over it with a fine tooth comb and offer suggestions for improvement.
Setting up an Airbrush Booth
When setting up an airbrush tanning booth the first thing you need to check is the filter system. Most tanning booths purchased from companies specializing in spray tanning supplies already come equipped with a filtration system. If not, then you can purchase one individually and secure it yourself. The filtration system is essential because it will suck away the mist caused by the spray tan gun.
The second thing you need to take care of is protecting the walls and floors with either plastic or vinyl. Finally, be sure to keep supplies on hand, like clean towels for the customers to stand on. Gloves for the spray tan technicians are also must-haves.
Evening Out a Spray Tan
Have you ever accidentally applied barrier cream to unwanted areas? This can result in white patches where the spray tanning solution has not been able to develop. When this happens there are a few tricks you can use to disguise un-tanned skin.
For a quick fix, apply bronzer to patchy areas. Loose mineral make-up tends to work best. For a long lasting solution, take baby oil and apply it to the spotty areas. Allow it to soak for 20 minutes and then take a wash cloth and warm water to the area. This will remove any substances on the skin so you can then evenly apply self-tanner that when dry will blend in with the rest of your spray tanning solution.
Corey Feldman on Dancing On Ice
Earlier this week I wrote about the UK show “Dancing on Ice.” American stars have graced the skating rink, including a star of the current season, Corey Feldman. He is best known for being a successful child actor in the 1980s and one half of “the Coreys” (the other being the late Corey Haim).
The latest gossip surrounding the show is that Feldman is a difficult contestant. Apparently, he doesn’t like to take the advice of his professional skating partner, even though he has admitted that his skating skill level is “zero.” The other brouhaha? Feldman has refused to get a spray tan even though there are makeshift spray tan tents behind the scenes to give the contestants golden glows.
