Spray Tanning Tent Buyer’s Guide
Every spray tan artist knows that the equipment they use is one of the most crucial determinants when it comes to the overall quality of a tan. Your skills and expertise as a spray tan artist can quickly be nullified by an inadequate applicator or poorly chosen solution. The tanning tent, while often overlooked, is another indispensable tool that can enhance the quality of your service and add a layer of professionalism to your business.
When purchasing a spray tan tent, one of the most important factors to consider is convenience, particularly if you are operating a mobile business. How easy is it to setup, takedown and transport the tent? How easy is it to clean? Of course, you have to balance these needs with quality, so be sure to look for tents made of strong materials like vinyl. Remember that your client will be in the tent, so look for models with windows, which will let some much-needed light into the enclosure.
Skin Tones Across Cultures
In Western culture, bronzed skin is a symbol of beauty and radiance; we tend to associate pale skin with a lack of nutrition and inadequate physical activity. For much of the world, however, light, fair skin is the object. In many Asian countries and the Middle East, people actually use skin-whitening products to get a lighter complexion.
In a society where tanning beds and sunless tan solution are the norm, it may seem odd that light skin is envied. You only have to look at the nature of the upper classes in each society, however, to see why certain skin tones are preferred. For many countries, light skin is an indication that you are wealthy and don’t have to subject your body to the toils of manual labor. People in the lower classes who work in the fields or in markets on the streets obviously have much darker skin. In America, however, most people—even low wage laborers—spend their time indoors, so it’s typically the more affluent strata of society that distinguish themselves by making the concerted effort to go tanning.
Tanning Bed Tax Less Than a Week Away
As if there weren’t already enough reasons to avoid tanning beds, on July 1 you’ll have one more. That’s when the a new 10 percent tax on tanning beds, which was outlined in the health care reform bill, will come into affect. If the threat of melanoma wasn’t enough to deter you from using tanning beds, a 10 percent tax may do the trick.
Many people have expressed reluctance to make the switch to spray tanning, and the new tax could serve as a catalyst for experimentation with the process. If you’ve never stepped into a spray tan tent before, now is the time. Not only is spray tanning safer, you also have instantly bronzed skin every time without the risk of burning. And since spray tanning isn’t subject to the new tax, it will likely be the more economical option in the long run.

I Want It Now!
It’s no secret that instant gratification has become the norm in American society. Not only do people want instantaneous access to friends, products and information, but they also don’t want to think about any sort of long-term ramifications. This is evidenced in manifold ways—from ever increasing amounts of public and private debt, to the droves of people that lineup for fast food everyday. Part of this instant gratification culture is a blatant disregard for the proven risk of a behavior. Take tanning for example.
Whether you fake bake in a tanning bed or spend hours on end in the sun, there is a staggering amount of evidence linking UV exposure to melanoma and other debilitating conditions. Of course, this hasn’t deterred countless people from continuing these practices. I understand that people often put their current beauty ahead of adverse health in the future, but in this case, it is completely unnecessary. Spray tanning supplies can give you better results in less time with no risk—talk about instant gratification.
Spray Tanning During Summer
After using tanning beds for years and seeing the risks firsthand, it’s become apparent that spray tanning is the wave of the future. Since I discovered spray tanning a couple of years ago, I’ve become an outspoken advocate of the practice. There is no UV exposure or risk of burning, which means that the results are better and I don’t have to worry about any long-term detriments. I’m not afraid to say that I go spray tanning on a regular basis—I mean, who doesn’t want beautifully bronzed skin throughout the year?
During the winter, I typically use a very low DHA tanning solution, as my fair skin tans easily. But when the weather begins to heat up and the sun comes out, I tend to spend the majority of my free time outside—playing sports, going to the beach or just reading a book in the front yard. Thanks to this extra sun exposure, my skin gets darker during the summer months. So instead of going spray tanning once a week, I reduce my appointments and switch to a slightly darker tanning solution.
Starting a Spray Tanning Business
With the economy still struggling to gain momentum, many people are looking for ways to generate extra income or even undertake their own business endeavor. Unfortunately, many of the opportunities out there today are pyramid schemes or positions as independent sales representatives. One burgeoning industry that has an ever-increasing market, however, is spray tanning. Due to the detrimental effects of tanning beds, spray tanning is gaining popularity as a safe alternative for achieving gorgeous skin. And unlike other business ventures you may have considered, as a spray tan artist you will be your own boss and have the opportunity to work directly with your clients to improve their self-esteem.
Now you may be wondering how to start a tanning business. Where to go for equipment and training, how much to charge, whether or not you need a business license? And while this may seem daunting, there are a variety of online resources and even classes you can take to garner all of the necessary information and industry knowhow.
Getting a Perfect Spray Tan
Despite being unequivocally the safest method of tanning, many people are still apprehensive about getting a spray tan. One of the main reasons for this trepidation is the notion that spray tanning often results in a Minute-Maid orange, artificial-looking tan. And while people have certainly fallen victim to subpar spray tanning in the past, if you follow some basic instructions, your tan will look amazing every time.
First, always exfoliate and shave areas with unwanted hair, as this will help the spray tan solution adhere correctly. Before you go for your tan, be sure to moisturize so that your skin is receptive to the solution. Finally, if there are areas of your tan that appear blotchy, you can find an AHA or BHA cleanser to even out the area.
UV Radiation Explained
By now you are probably well aware of the inherent risks of tanning and exposure to UV radiation, but do you know how this radiation works and why it is so detrimental? On the light spectrum, UV rays are shorter than visible light but longer than x-rays, meaning that humans can’t see them and they emit a considerable amount of radiation. Because it is an ionizing radiation, UV causes chemical reactions, such as sunburns. And while this is certainly one of the negative chemical reactions, small amounts of UV exposure are necessary for proper vitamin D synthesis.
In order to help people determine their risk, a UV index has been developed. This internationally used system certainly isn’t foolproof, but it serves as an effective way to gauge your risk on any given day. Tanning beds utilize the same UV radiation we get from the sun, but since these rays are highly concentrated, their detrimental effect is magnified. Because of this, sunless tanning methods are the only safe way to darken your skin.
Researchers Link Tanning Beds to Melanoma
While driving to work this morning I listened to a podcast by NPR that investigated the risk of tanning beds. A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Minnesota explored the risk of tanning beds and their correlation to melanoma development. More than 1,100 melanoma patients ages 25-59 were compared to a group of similar, but healthy, individuals. The researchers found that those with significant tanning bed usage—50 or more hours in a lifetime; more than 100 sessions in a lifetime; or 10 or more years of usage—were 2.5 to 3 times as likely to contract melanoma.
They were quick to assert, however, that tanning in the sun can be just as dangerous. Tanning beds simply concentration the same UV rays. This led to the conclusion that there was no safe way to tan, but the researchers obviously neglected the only truly safe tanning method: airbrush tanning.
