Learning the Ropes

When I first started my own spray tanning business last winter, I admittedly had little knowledge about the industry. Luckily, my first several customers were friends and acquaintances, so my amateurish techniques didn’t hamper my business too badly. After several trial-and-error sessions, I’ve finally developed a methodology that works.

One of the biggest speed bumps in the beginning was containing the excess spray from the applicator. After some unfortunate mishaps, I went online and invested in a couple of spray tan tents. These pragmatic pieces of equipment not only eliminated the mess, but also put me more at ease while I was at work.

Getting the Perfect Tan

For the past three years, I have been aspiring to be a fashion model. After countless shows and auditions, I finally landed my first big gig last week, and I wanted to be sure that I looked my best. Since it’s the dead of winter, my tan was leaving something to be desired. And I didn’t want to go in a tanning bed and risk getting burned.

One of my friends suggested that I try sunless tanning products. Since I had never gone this route before, I was reluctant to try something new before the shoot. She suggested that I test the solution in a discreet area, such as underneath my arm. After sampling a couple of products, I found one that blended perfectly with my skin tone. I’m happy to say that the shoot went off without a hitch, and now I have three more gigs lined up in the next month.

Last weekend, my boyfriend and I decided to get ourselves spray tans. In an effort to save a little dough, we decided to both use the same spray tanning solution: big mistake. It turns out that the solution you use is dependent on the skin color and type that you naturally have.

I am from Latin descent, while his entirely family is native to Russia. The solution we used looked great on me and ended up enhancing my already radiant glow—not to be too conceited. When it was his turn, however, the solution didn’t mix well with his clear complexion, and he came out looking more like a carrot than a bronzed god.
