Getting Accustomed To Sunless Tanning Lotion
My mother grew up in Florida and got accustomed to a certain style of living, at least where the weather was concerned, which is why it was such a huge change for her to move to Oregon when my father got a promising job offer. She was used to constant sunshine and laying out in the warmth, rather than the amount of cloudiness and rainfall that comes with the Pacific Northwest.
She also got used to the way it affected her appearance. In other words, she was accustomed to having a tan pretty much all throughout the year, which suddenly went away moving to the Pacific Northwest. She decided to switch to a sunless tanning lotion, knowing that it would be better for her skin, especially after all that sun exposure in Florida.

“Back in the 80′s, it was ‘how tan and how blonde can you be?!’ ” said Andrea Licata Bernath.
It was that quest that landed Bernath on the other side of our cameras more than two decades later — but let’s start at the beginning.
Bernath was just 29-years-old when she was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma 12 years ago.
“Really when I was first diagnosed I didn’t have a fear. You know, I thought I go to the dermatologist and they could cut it out and I could be on my way,” said Bernath.
But that just wasn’t the case.
Bernath was diagnosed on a Thursday. On the next Monday she had her first surgery. In four and half hours doctors removed 16 percent of the muscle in her back, 42 lymph nodes, and 5 other sites they were concerned about. And she has the scars to prove it.
But she’s not alone.
Nearly 77,000 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed this year in the US. And this cancer will kill more than 9,000 people.
“Even though I got, I had melanoma, I still wanted to be tan. So I started going to tanning facilities and trying other self tanner. And everything I tried turned me some shade of orange.”
So, Andrea quit her job in sales and marketing for a Fortune 500 company and developed her own product for sunless tanning, Kahuna Bay Spray Tan.
The business started as a retail location but other spas and salons wanted the product. It didn’t take long for Andrea and her business partner Chris to get out of the retail side and go strictly into distribution.
Now they are one of the industry leaders. Their sunless tanning products are used by celebrities, pageants, and network news agencies – and carried in more than 12,000 salons and spas around the world.
“We’ve had people from as far away as Japan come here to this tiny little facility.”
Right now they currently employ 11 people in the Toledo area — including several at the Kahuna Bay Spray Tan franchise retail store, which opened this week in Sylvania, Ohio. It’s an exciting time — but for Andrea it is also deeply personal.
“We get contacted by people who have been diagnosed with melanoma daily. And it’s getting younger and younger. If these kids can be aware. If they can go sunless. Wear their sunscreen. We will do what we can to make them beautiful.”

The History of Sunless Tanning
Many people have turned to using sunless tanning lotions on themselves rather than tanning in the sun, for obvious reasons, considering the sun’s UV rays and ties to skin cancer. These lotions work by using a dihydroxyacetone (also known as DHA) and erythrulose. These are both dyeing products that have been deemed completely safe.
The DHA found in a sunless tanning lotion is a plant-based creation that comes from sugar beets and sugar cane; it was discovered as a skin-coloring agent in the 1920s and marketed for sunless tanning in the 1960s, though the natural-looking tans that can be seen today weren’t common until the 1980s. Today, the combination of chemicals allows for a very natural-looking tan, compared to the very fake-looking ones that were common in the earliest uses of DHA.
Bronzing
I love moisturizers that have a little bronzer in them! Especially sunless tan extenders with bronzers! You instantly get that beautiful golden tone to your skin. I love the way the sun shines off it. To me that is the most beautiful thing!
The last sunless tan extender I purchased had a light shimmer to it. It was so cute! Not too glittery, but just a subtle bronze shimmer. It really made my skin pop! I even use a little on my face for

Preping for Self Tanning
Even if you are using a self tanner, it is very important to prep your skin! The better you prepare your skin for self tanning lotions or sunless 
tanning sprays, the better your results will be! Here are a few tips.
Exfoliate before applying the self tanner! Use a loofah or washcloth and a body scrub/wash, avoid anything oily as this can block the sunless tanning products from developing on your skin. Shave your legs, do not wax! Waxing will also cause the self tanning lotion to not develop properly. Do not moisturize before applying self tanner, unless you have any dry areas (elbows, knees) apply a thin layer of moisturizer to these areas. This will keep too much of the self tanner from absorbing into these dry areas!
