Removing Spray Tan Stains from Clothes
If you’ve broken one of the cardinal rules of spray tanning –“thou shall not wear tight fitting clothes immediately after receiving a spray on tan” – then you’ll need some help removing the stains. Removing stains from cotton clothing is simple; just run them through the wash with a bit of spot treatment. Synthetic fabrics, like polyester, should be soaked in warm water with pre-treater. If the stain grows faint, then throw it in the wash per usual.
Dry clean only clothing is a bit trickier. Try soaking the garment in warm water with non-bleach spot remover, rinse, and then allow it to air dry. If this does not work, then you’ll need to take the garment to a professional dry cleaner. Make sure to tell them what compounds were in the spray on tan so the cleaner knows how to treat the spot.
The Only Way is Essex
Thanks to the Internet I can watch television shows from all over the world. I particularly appreciate being able to watch British comedies (several of which get exported to the U.S. – did you know “The Office” was adapted for American audiences from the British version?). Though I’m a little ashamed to admit it, I recently got hooked on a British reality show called “The Only Way is Essex.” It is sort of a British hybrid of “Jersey Shore” and “The O.C.”
One of the main characters in the first two seasons of the show is a beautician named Amy Childs. She run’s a salon, appropriately named “Amy’s Salon,” which offers spray tanning services. As her salon space isn’t very large, she uses mobile sunless tanning equipment, like a pop up spray tan tent, to give clients a great glow.
Tanning Solution Prep and Application
Preparation is a key element for achieving a quality sunless tan. Before applying tanner exfoliate all over with a scrub that is free from essential oils. Dead skin cells and oily residue can effect how the skin absorbs color, so it’s best to remove both. Protect finger nails from staining with a light layer of lotion that will form a barrier to keep color out.
As tempting as it may be to wear gloves when applying tanning solution, using your bare hands is really the way to go. Slowly and gently wipe the solution one way and then the other, using broad strokes. Dilute the tanner a bit when applying to knees and elbows because they naturally look darker.
Correcting a Sunless Tan
As we’ve mentioned before, for a perfect sun kissed glow without UV damage, sunless tanning is the way to go. Sunless tanning lotions can be applied at home if you want to save some money by not going to a salon. Even the best sunless tanning solution can leave behind some imperfections.
Any blemishes left by sunless tanning solution can be remedied fairly easily. Remove excess solution from hands and nails with a warm, wet towel. For a tan that is a bit too vibrant, add skim milk to a bath. The natural acids within the milk will mellow the color.

Is DHA Safe?
Most people who have gotten a faux tan often ask the question: Is DHA safe? The answer is: yes. DHA (dihydroxyacetone) was recognized as a skin coloring agent during the 1920s. Further research in the 1950s proved that DHA only reacts with the amino acids in the top “dead” layer of skin.
By the 1960s, Coppertone had produced its first consumer sunless tanning lotion. In the 1970s, the FDA added DHA to their list of permanently approved cosmetic ingredients. Today, millions of gallons of spray tanning solution containing DHA are used each year with no detrimental effects.
Answers to Common Spray On Tan Questions
I’ve been using spray on tans for quite a while now to achieve a healthy glow. As a result, many of my friends consult with me before going to get a tan of their own. One common question I’m often asked is, “Will a spray on tan protect me from the sun?” The answer is unequivocally no! A spray on tan will give you a lovely glow, but you still need to put on sunscreen before spending a day at the beach.
Another common question I hear is, “Is DHA safe?” The answer is yes. DHA is FDA approved, but it doesn’t hurt to read the ingredient list on the spray on tan solution, particularly if you have any allergies or skin sensitivities.

Shop Online for Spray Tan Solution
There are some items that people hesitate to purchase over the internet. Clothing, in particular, comes to mind as many people wish to try on the items prior to purchase. People are also wary of purchasing cosmetic items over the internet. I am of the mindset that if you know what you want, it is often better to purchase online.
For instance, I have spray tan equipment in my home because I enjoy getting an even, all over glow every few weeks. As a result I go through a lot of spray tan solution in a year. Since I already know what brand works best for me, I have found wholesalers online from whom I can purchase in bulk at a low price – much lower than what I can get at a local beauty supply store or salon.
Why is My Tan Blotchy?
Who doesn’t love the feeling of coming out of a spray tanning salon with a perfectly even golden glow? Unfortunately, that feeling can be ruined when a seemingly perfect tan begins to fade in a blotchy pattern. What are the reasons a tan becomes blotchy?
One culprit can be getting a spray tan over an existing tan. Airbrush tanning solution cannot properly react with the skin if there is an existing tan in the way. Another cause of a blotchy tan can be using too deep of a color. Skin cells die and shed at different times, so if the applied color is too far away from the natural skin tone then as skin sloughs off it will look patchy.
