What to Consider When Starting a Spray Tan Business

Tuesday, February 15, 2011
posted by TanNBeautiful

Last week we reported the essential steps to follow when starting your very own mobile tanning business. This week, we would like to discuss the seven things to consider when opening a stationary spray tan business

1. You need to scope out your competition. Visit other tanning salons and get a feel for how they operate, making mental notes of what you like and don’t like about the company.
2. Draft our a business plan, which includes your desired location, the number of spray tan booths you’d like to have and the other services (such as tanning items) you may provide.
3. Meet with a local bank or other lender about financing your business. Be sure to bring your business plan along for them to review.
4. Pick out a location that’s busy and presents easy access to customers. Nobody wants to travel outside of town or have to go on a wild goose chase to find your spray tan business. Plus, starting shop in an already-busy location will promote more walk-in customers.
5. Purchase the necessary equipment for your business. You know, spray tanning airbrushes, nozzles, tubes, towels, lotions, solutions and other must-haves to get your business running.
6. You’ll want to set up insurance on your business. Plus, many lenders may not deliver if you cannot prove that your have valid business insurance.
7. Advertise your business before you open the doors to customers. Be sure to put your business phone number in the yellow pages, post flyers, call local radio stations and maybe even hand out free tanning towels with your business logo printed on it.

Seven Steps to Starting a Mobile Sunless-Tanning Business

Tuesday, February 8, 2011
posted by TanNBeautiful

Sunless tanning has become a booming business these days as the realization of the dangers of excess sun exposure has crept into the conscious of many sun worshipers. Therefore, mobile tanning businesses are popping up everywhere to accommodate the demand. Such a business venture is easier than you think, in fact, if you were to follow these simple seven steps you could go into business for yourself.

1. Although a mobile-tanning business presents fewer upfront costs, you should expect to spend about $10,000 to obtain the necessary equipment (including the van and proper licensing) to get started.
2. You’ll need to take a high-volume, low-pressure training course for airbrush tanning if you’re a newbie to the business. This will also help you become familiar with the FDA regulations for your business.
3. Contact your state board of cosmetology about what specific licenses you may need and how to obtain them.
4. Purchase the equipment you’ve planned to buy to get things underway. And be sure to consider the size limitations of your van before purchasing any equipment.
5. Purchase the utility van and have fun decorating it with your business logo and then setting up all of the equipment inside so it’s ready to hot the road.
6. Set out a map of locations for your mobile business. Where will you stop each day? Will these locations change or rotate? Will you also travel to residential locations upon request?
7. Publicize your mobile sunless tanning business! It’s important that you begin to make a name for yourself by introducing yourself to local businesses and college campuses.

Creating a Supplemental Income

posted by TanNBeautiful

Most people aren’t always fulfilled by their chosen profession or vocation. This is especially the case in a struggling economy. They say it’s getting better but for some reason those record-breaking corporate profits aren’t translating into higher wages and salaries. They don’t even seem to be creating more jobs. As a result, many of us are stuck in a rut when it comes to getting a rewarding and fulfilling job.

If this sounds anything like you then you may find the fulfillment you’re looking for in a weekend or after-hours business of your own. The best part is, you don’t have to quit your day job to make money doing something you love. When you start a tanning business you’ll not only add enjoyment to your own professional life, you’ll also bring in those critical extra dollars to help pay the bills. Don’t confine yourself to the daily grind and find financial freedom by sharing your passion with the world. You’ll be glad you did.

Combating Spray Tanning Skepticism

Monday, July 26, 2010
posted by TanNBeautiful

As a spray tanning professional, I’m used to people expressing skepticism when they first hear about sunless tanning. And I have to admit, it is a little suspicious when someone tells you that you can achieve an indistinguishable, natural looking tan with spray-on products. Of course, combating this cynicism is one of the main hurdles in attracting new customers.

In my experience, the only way to change a person’s preconceived notions about spray tanning is by showing them the results firsthand; this is one of the reasons I am such a big advocate for mobile sunless tanning. Several times a week I will set up my tanning tents in areas with a high amount of foot traffic and apply tans to some of my other spray tan artists. This allows people walking by to see the process and results up-close

Determining Operating Costs for Your Tanning Business

Thursday, May 27, 2010
posted by TanNBeautiful

When you start a tanning business, it seems relatively simple at first blush, but there are several variables to consider when determining the operating costs. Everyone knows that they will have to invest in an applicator and tanning solution, but do you know how much solution you need? How much are you going to spend on gas, insurance and additional supplies?

Every new applicator will cost from $200 to around $500, but this is a one-time purchase; determining the volume of solution, lotion and other products is more difficult. About two ounces of solution should be used on each tan, meaning that the solution costs per tan should be about $2-3. The one cost that is often overlooked with mobile tanning companies is gas and insurance for vehicles. While applying each tan itself may be relatively inexpensive, getting there may not be. It is important to determine an epicenter and maximum radius you are willing to travel to keep these costs at a minimum.

Hiring New Spray Tan Artists

Friday, May 7, 2010
posted by TanNBeautiful

If you are just starting your first spray tan business, chances are you have few, if any, other employees. For a fledgling enterprise, having a limited rota of spray artists isn’t an issue. As your business begins to grow, however, you will find that you need additional artists to avoid scheduling conflicts and meet the demands of your growing clientele. Qualified spray tan artists are hard to come by, so it is important to have a system in place for training new hires.

Start by having them observe yourself or another qualified spray tan artist. Once they have learned the proper technique and methodology for applying the solution, it is good to have them hone their skills on non-paying customers; see if they have a friend or relative who is willing to serve as a test subject. After a couple of debacles with some of my own hires, I also tell their first few customers that the artist is new and offer them a discount, just in case.
