Cashing in on Holiday Parties
You may think that cooler weather is bad for the tanning business, but I’ve found the opposite to be true. Yes, my spray tanning salon is generally busier in the summer, but I get plenty of business during the month of December. The reason? Holiday parties.
Even in this economy, a lot of companies still spring for a nice dinner or cocktail event where it is expected that employees and their spouses will get dressed up. Plenty of women come into my salon or have me bring tanning tents to their houses so they can get a great looking glow to go with their slinky, sequin party dresses. These holiday parties do wonders for bolstering my cool weather business!
Beware of Snow Glare
Over Christmas break I’m heading out to Colorado to spend a week skiing and snowboarding with friends. Last year I got very painful sunburns on my face and lips due to snow glare. The cool weather and ample layers of clothing made me falsely believe that I was protected from the sun’s rays.
Quite the opposite was true. It turns out that high altitudes and glare from white highly reflective snow makes a person more susceptible to the sun’s rays. This year, I’ll be wearing sunscreen and lip balm with SPF 10. If need be, I’ll bring along a tanning tent and some spray tan solution to even out any color I pick up out on the slopes.
Baring It All?
Newcomers to spray tanning often ask me this question: Do I have to bare it all? Rest at ease; the answer is no.
Some ladies and gentlemen may feel free enough to go nude during a spray tan session, but it is absolutely not required. You can wear a bathing suit or underwear during the tanning session. If you do choose to wear a bathing suit while in spray tan tents, then you’ll likely be asked to shift straps and waistbands periodically so the technician can make sure you don’t have visible tan lines.
Is Airbrush Better than Misting?
I like to indulge in a spray tan once or twice a month. Each time I go to the salon I opt to have an airbrush tan rather than use the misting booth. Simply put, a machine cannot give you the same quality tan as a trained technician.
A booth is not customized to your height, weight, and other body concerns. You would have to do some amazing body contours to get every inch of your body covered evenly. When you get an airbrush tan, you simply stand in a spray tan tent and an expert technician gives you a tan customized to your body type.

When spray tanning caught on several years ago, all of the girls in my town flocked to the salon the next town over before any big occasion; Homecoming, Winter Formal, Prom, etc. It amazed me how much they were willing to spend on getting ready for these events. This weekend I spent some time in Vancouver’s famed Stanley Park. The weather was excellent so I spent much of the day walking along the seawall. I did remember to put on sunscreen, but unfortunately, that did not prevent an awful farmer’s tan from developing.

Pre-Party Extravaganza
To be honest, I don’t enjoy getting all dolled up for special occasions. Don’t get me wrong, I usually like the end result, but I hate the struggle to get hair curled and pinned in place and make-up applied just so. I had a big summer event to attend that many of my friends were attending as well.
