In-House Salon
Whenever I host a large party, I don’t like to leave the house day-of. Rather than going to the salon to have my skin, hair, nails, and make-up done, I have the professionals come to me. My make-up girl, who I’ve been using for several years, has some wonderful contacts.
She set everything up for me before my latest event. She called in a mobile spray tanning company and had her best hair and nails girl assist her for the day. By having the salon in my home, I was able to keep an eye on the party set-up while also being made up for the event. You can be sure that I gave my make-up girl and her co-workers huge tips for being so accommodating.
Prom Season
Prom season is almost upon us. I was shopping for a new outfit for work when I spotted the first frilly, glittering, brightly colored prom dresses. In the dressing room, the teenage girl in the next room over kept shouting to her friend, “What do you think of this one?!”
I swear I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop; they were so loud I couldn’t help but hear. Once they’d found their gowns the conversation quickly turned to shoes, accessories, and make-up. Apparently, there’s a new airbrush tanning system in place at the local salon that is supposed to be outstanding. I think I’ll check it out once prom season is over.
Sally’s Salon Success
Sally, the owner of the self-titled “Sally’s Salon,” has become a good friend of mine over the years. (This is to be expected given that I’ve visited the salon nearly every other week for more than three years now). Since her store first opened the clientele has grown steadily. A salon just a few blocks over has not fared as well over the years.
I mentioned this to Sally and asked her why she thinks her salon has done so much better. “Homework,” she replied. Before she opened her salon she did a lot of research into how to start a tanning salon business. From location to products to staff hiring she learned every little detail, so when it was time to open the business she had a detailed plan in place.
Lifting Spirits
It always amazes me how pampering myself just a tiny bit can instantly lift my spirits. Getting my nails done or even getting a haircut makes me feel refreshed. Getting a spray tan is a bit more of a splurge than the $20 I would normally spend on manicure or a blow-out, so I usually reserve tanning for special occasions or when I need a real pick-me-up.
Last week, I finally got over a nasty case of the flu that prevented me from attending my best friend’s birthday bash. To cheer myself up – and get back to a less sickly looking color- I booked a salon date for myself and my best friend. The salon used a state of the art airbrush tanning system that left both of our skins looking flawless. That definitely put a bounce back in my step!
Little Touches
I find that it’s the little touches that make the difference between a good salon and a great salon. For instance, at the salon I frequent, just outside the spray tanning booths they have cubbies and hooks for patrons to leave their clothing and bags on. Inside of the booth there is a small inset shelf filled with wipes, lotion, and anything else you may need following a misting conducted with immaculate airbrush tanning supplies.
My favorite little touch has to be the complimentary towels. They always feel as though they’re fresh from the dryer. They’re warm, fluffy, and lightly scented. On top of the fresh towels, the salon staff leave mints, much like what you would expect from turn down service and a swanky hotel.
Positive Reviews
Before I try out a new tanning salon, I like to know about other patrons experiences are. If the salon gets awful reviews then I won’t waste my time. On the other hand, if a salon gets overwhelmingly positive reviews, then I’m more inclined to pay a visit, if only to see what all the fuss is about.
There’s a fairly new salon that opened up approximately 10 minutes from my home. As that location is much closer than the salon I normally attend, I decided to check it out after seeing some great reviews. Just as the other patrons described, the salon was immaculate, the airbrush tanning solution settled into a gorgeous shade of tan, and the staff were polite and accommodating. Kudos to the online reviewing community for pointing me in the right direction!
Salon Regular
Over the years, I’ve become a regular at my neighborhood salon. I started out going in twice a month to have my nails done. Then I started getting my eyebrows and hair done, too. Ten years later, I’m getting “the works” done nearly every month!
For my loyalty and helping to drive business to the salon, the owners often give me a discount. Usually I apply the discount to an airbrush tanning session. I don’t get it very often; it’s more for special occasions. I don’t know what kind of airbrush tanning equipment they use but the results are phenomenal!
Tanning Pick Me Up
Some girls get their hair styled. Others indulge in manicures and pedicures. Personally, when I want a pick me up, I go for airbrush tanning. The salon I frequent does an impeccable job of making sure their customers are well looked after.
They provide you with a robe, slippers, and a shower cap to change into in a private dressing room. When you’re ready for the airbrush tanning session you’re led into another private room where a skilled technician gives you an all-over glow. After every appointment I always walk out with a big smile on my face and a spring in my step.
Men and Spray Tanning
Every now and then I enjoy getting a spray tan at a local salon. I have very fair skin that they’ve managed to find the correct solution for that doesn’t make me look like an oompa-loompa. After my last appointment my boyfriend sort of sheepishly asked me about the tanning process and if there were guys who go to the salon.
Of course, the answer is: “yes.” Spray tanning isn’t just for women; in fact, AskMen recently had an article about spray tanning. Next time I go to the salon I’ll ask my boyfriend to come with me. Maybe we’ll even get side by side tanning tents!
Tips for Spray Tanning
There’s nothing better than getting a spray tan to achieve a worry-free glow. Unfortunately, some ladies and gentlemen make tragic mistakes when spray tanning that leave them looking like members of the Jersey Shore cast. Follow these tips before you step into the tanning tent and you’ll walk out with a flawless tan:
For starters, do not wear any makeup, lotion, sunscreen, or oils when getting a spray tan. These barriers will make it hard for the spray to penetrate the skin and get to work. Cover your manicure and pedicure with Vaseline to protect the color of your nails. Finally, bring an umbrella along to your appointment to avoid raindrops dotting your new tan.
