Ringing in the New Year
My time visiting my aunt and uncle in Florida has been wonderful. I spent December 31st exploring South Beach and stopping by various hot spots to ring in the New Year. Thank goodness I got a spray tan before I took my trip because every man and woman in Miami seems to sport a fantastic glow. Without a tan, I would have stood out like a sore thumb.
I spent the first day of 2012 lying on the beach, recovering from the previous night’s festivities. Getting this great spray tan got me thinking about starting my own salon business. While we were relaxing, I decided to bounce some ideas off of my aunt on how to start a tanning salon business. She’s a good listener and made some excellent points about starting a new business venture.
Turning a Habit into a Business
The entrepreneurial spirit is something I greatly admire. That’s why I was cheered to read about a young woman who turned her $100 a week spray tanning habit into a viable business. Realizing how much people like her are willing to spend to get a sun kissed look, she decided to see if she could start her own company.
The young woman bought a spray tan machine on eBay and tested out her skills on friends and family. Once she was convinced that this was a potential career rather than a hobby, she took the steps to get certified. She now is the proud owner of a mobile spray tanning business with a cadre of satisfied, regular customers. It just goes to show that if you are interested in something, chances are others are, too.
Weddings Are Big Business
Weddings, even small weddings, can cost a lot of money. Paying for the venue, food, and entertainment all add up. The bride will incur a lot of costs associated with her dress, shoes, hair and make-up. Today’s modern bride is also willing to spend money on getting a sun-kissed glow for their wedding day photos, especially if they’re having a summer, beach, or destination wedding.
For spray tan business owners looking to expand their customer base, try catering to brides. Rent a booth at a local wedding showcase (nearly every major city has a showcase at least once a year) and advertise in bridal publications and websites. You can even come up with cute package names and deals to cater to those about to say ‘I Do!’ Trust me, if you make a bride look good on her big day, you will have a customer for life.
Mobile Sunless Tanning Business Part 2
In order to make your business succeed you’ll need top quality equipment. You’ll need a HVLP or LVLP gun, sunless tanning solution, and spray tan tents. It’s wise to also have lotions and exfoliating creams to sell to your clients so they can properly maintain their tans. Of course, you’ll also need a van or large vehicle to transport your equipment.
Once you have your equipment in place, it’s time to market your enterprise! There’s nothing wrong with being a shameless self-promoter. Put your name and business information on the side of your car; print up flyers and business cards to give out; purchase advertising in local papers. Consider making deals with hotels and gyms to set up shop every once in a while; they can market it as a special concierge service to their customers. The best way to grow your business is by positive word of mouth, so make sure you treat your customers with the utmost respect and give them an incredible sunless tan!

Perks of Sunless Tanning
If you’re one of those sun worshipers who have yet to learn about the dangers of the sun’s UV rays, listen up! I’m not here to lecture you about how toxic sun tanning can be to your body, instead I’ve chosen to take a proactive approach and let you know about the many benefits of sunless tanning, also known as spray tanning.
For starters, sunless tanning is 100-percent UV free, which makes it the healthiest and safest way to tan, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Sunless tanning is a safe and easy solution for all skin types, especially for those with light-to-fair skin who usually have to burn first to absorb any color from the sun. Burning is never a good idea as it puts you at risk for skin cancer. With the wisdom you’ll gain as you make the transition from a sun seeker to a sunless tanner you’ll probably stop and ask yourself – Why don’t I start a tanning business? After all, sunless tanning is where it is!
Creating a Supplemental Income
Most people aren’t always fulfilled by their chosen profession or vocation. This is especially the case in a struggling economy. They say it’s getting better but for some reason those record-breaking corporate profits aren’t translating into higher wages and salaries. They don’t even seem to be creating more jobs. As a result, many of us are stuck in a rut when it comes to getting a rewarding and fulfilling job.
If this sounds anything like you then you may find the fulfillment you’re looking for in a weekend or after-hours business of your own. The best part is, you don’t have to quit your day job to make money doing something you love. When you start a tanning business you’ll not only add enjoyment to your own professional life, you’ll also bring in those critical extra dollars to help pay the bills. Don’t confine yourself to the daily grind and find financial freedom by sharing your passion with the world. You’ll be glad you did.
