Troubleshooting Client Complaints
Every now and then a client will call in saying that their tan is somehow messed up. As an experienced technician, chances are that you did nothing wrong in the application. The problem lies with the customer, so keep a few of these tips in mind to pinpoint why a customer’s tan doesn’t look the way she or he wanted.
For instance, if a client says that they have white marks going down the sides of their legs, ask them if they wore skinny jeans the same day as their session. Seams on skinny jeans can rub against the legs causing the sunless spray tan to rub off. Complaints of light patches behind the knees, inner arms, and back may be a result of night sweating. Have your client get sprayed first thing in the morning and then they can shower at night before bed. Finally, if a client claims they have no color on their calves and feet, a pedicure is probably the culprit, as the foot bath washes away color.
Brushing Up On Application Technique
Even those of us who have been in the spray tanning industry for a while can run into issues every now and then. For example, many of the technicians I have consulted with have reported issues with pooling on their clients’ skin. This can happen for a variety of reasons.
First, too much solution may be coming out of your spray tanning gun, so adjust the PSI accordingly. Second, be sure to keep moving. Each stroke should be applied with continuous, medium speed motion. Finally, your airbrush tanning system or technique may not be to blame at all; your client may not have properly prepared for the appointment. Remind your clients that body washes, depilatories, deodorant, and other creams applied to the body will not allow the solution to penetrate the skin, causing pooling.
My First Spray Tan ~ My Results
After allowing the tanning solution to dry a bit while standing in front of several drying fans, I got dressed. I slipped into sweatpants, flip flops and old T-shirt with my umbrella in hand. I came prepared knowing any chance of rain could make my new tan spotty. My weather predications were correct; I popped open my umbrella and walked three blocks to my car completely shielded.
Once I made it home, I was also careful not to disturb the sunless tan solution that had been applied to my skin. While keeping my tan intact, I also wanted to protect my furniture from any tanning solution that could rub off, so I put on a long-sleeved shirt and curled up on the couch, away from water and strenuous activity.
